  • What is the best material for outdoor lighting fixtures?

    There are many different materials you can choose from for your outdoor lighting fixtures. Material options include plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, copper, and brass. The material you choose to go with will depend on the weather conditions around your area, price, and longevity.


    Plastic is your cheapest option, however it is the least durable. Therefore, it can be easily damaged by weather conditions. This material is short-term and you will typically spend more in the long-run from constant replacement.


    Aluminum is low-quality and will therefore also not last very long when used outdoors. To extend the life of aluminum to about 3.5 years, it can be powder and marine coated.


    Stainless steel can be more difficult to maintain to keep it looking its best. It is not recommended if you live in an area of high humidity. The grade of steel you purchase will determine its resistance to corrosion and to keep it from discoloring, you should apply an electro-polish finish.


    Copper is a great material choice because of its high resistance to corrosion. Copper is also often used as a coat to make other materials stronger. Copper is long-lasting, but will discolor overtime due to the weather.


    Brass is an option that will hold up very well in weather. It will cost more, but it has better corrosion resistance, durability, and longevity. To receive the best quality lighting fixtures, be sure to get brass that is less than 15% zinc.

    Rain will eventually lead to discoloration in your lighting fixtures. LED products are built to operate in extreme temperatures, however their ability to function can weaken if there are some days with abnormal temperatures. In cold temperatures, LED lighting thrives because less thermal stress is put on the diodes and driver. In very warm temperatures, LEDs will underperform. They will adjust to overwork, which can then lower their life expectancy.
